How to check a travel ban in the UAE
Every official way to check, emirate by emirate, and what the result can and cannot tell you before you fly.
You can check for a UAE travel ban through official government services: the Dubai Police "Circulars and travel bans" service for Dubai, the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department's Estafser service for Abu Dhabi, and federal services for court execution files and the other emirates. Most checks use your Emirates ID or passport details and, for some services, UAE Pass.
The result usually confirms whether a ban or circular exists and gives a brief reason, but not always the full case. If a ban appears, the next step is to identify the case number and the authority behind it, because that decides how it can be lifted.
What a travel ban is
A travel ban is an order that prevents a person from leaving the UAE. It is a precaution: it keeps the person in the country while a claim or case against them is resolved. Bans are issued by the courts, by the public prosecution in criminal matters, and in some cases on the request of other authorities.
In civil and commercial cases, the current civil procedure rules allow a creditor to request a ban only where the debt is known and due, is at least AED 10,000, and there is a real risk that the debtor may leave. Some obligations, such as maintenance, are treated differently. In criminal cases, the public prosecution can restrict travel while a complaint is investigated or tried.
Common reasons for a ban
- Unpaid bank debts: personal loans, credit cards and overdrafts where the bank has filed a claim.
- Bounced cheques: since 2022 most are civil matters, but the holder can still pursue execution, which can include a ban request.
- Rental claims: unpaid rent claimed by a landlord at the Rental Disputes Centre or a rental committee.
- Execution files: where a court judgment has not been paid.
- Labour and employer matters: some disputes and reports involving employers.
- Criminal complaints: while a case is open with the police, prosecution or court.
Checking in Dubai: Dubai Police
Dubai Police offer a "Circulars and travel bans" enquiry, sometimes described as a criminal or financial status check, on the Dubai Police app and website. It shows whether you have an open financial or criminal case or circular in Dubai. You will typically need your Emirates ID or passport details, and some features require you to sign in with UAE Pass.
- Open the Dubai Police app or website and find the service for circulars and travel bans, or criminal status of financial cases.
- Choose to check by Emirates ID or by passport and nationality, and enter your details.
- Read the result carefully, and note any case or reference number it shows.
Our separate guide to the criminal status of financial cases explains this service in more detail.
Checking in Abu Dhabi: the Estafser service
The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department provides the Estafser enquiry service through its website and smart services. It covers cases and travel bans in the Abu Dhabi courts. As with Dubai, you will usually need your Emirates ID or passport details.
Federal services and the other emirates
For cases in the federal courts and the emirates without their own judicial department, the Ministry of Justice provides enquiry services for court and execution files, and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) provides residency and identity services. If you live in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, or you are not sure which authority holds your case, it is worth checking more than one service, or asking a lawyer to check for you.
| Where the case is | Where to check | Usually needed |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai (police, prosecution, courts) | Dubai Police app or website | Emirates ID or passport; UAE Pass for some features |
| Abu Dhabi courts | Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, Estafser | Emirates ID or passport |
| Federal courts and execution files | Ministry of Justice services | Emirates ID, case details if known |
| Not sure | Several of the above, or ask us | Emirates ID and passport details |
What the result tells you, and what it does not
The free online services are designed to tell you whether something exists, not to give you the whole file. A result may show only a short reason and a reference. It may not show the amount claimed, the claimant, the stage of the case, or whether the claimant would settle. A clear result is reassuring, but it reflects the records available to that service at that time, and a case in another emirate may not appear.
If you are planning to travel soon after a dispute, a missed payment or a cancelled visa, check through more than one channel and allow time to act if something appears.
If a ban appears
- Do not go to the airport hoping for the best. A ban will normally be enforced at departure.
- Identify the case: the authority, the case or file number, and the claimant.
- Find out what closes it: payment, settlement, security deposited with the court, or a successful application.
- Get the release in writing and make sure it is filed with the authority that issued the ban.
- Check again after the release has been processed.
