Visa cancellation and the grace period in the UAE

How long you can stay after a residence visa is cancelled, what overstaying costs, and the problems to solve before the deadline.

Guide · Immigration · Updated 28 October 2026 · 8 min read

In short

When a UAE residence visa is cancelled, most holders have a grace period to leave the country or change to a new status. The length depends on the visa category, and longer periods apply to some long-term and skilled categories. After the grace period, overstay fines apply, which have been unified at AED 50 per day for most visa types.

Before the grace period ends, check for any travel ban, labour complaint or absconding report, because these can stop you leaving or obtaining a new visa.

What cancellation means

A residence visa is cancelled when the sponsor, usually the employer, or the visa holder applies to end it, for example on resignation, termination or a change of sponsor. Employment visa cancellation involves both the labour side, through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and the residency side, through the immigration authority. Keep a copy of the cancellation document.

How long is the grace period?

Under the residency reforms introduced from October 2022, grace periods vary by category. Many standard residence visas carry a grace period of around sixty days, and some long-term and skilled categories, such as golden visa holders, have longer periods. The exact period applying to you is set by the immigration authority and can change, so always confirm it.

How to check your status

You can check your visa and residency status through the official services of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), and of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai. Many people search for a "visa cancellation status check by passport number": use the official ICP or GDRFA channels for this, not third-party sites.

Overstay fines

If you remain after the grace period without a valid status, a daily fine applies, which has been unified at AED 50 per day for most visa types. Fines are calculated from the day after the grace period ends. Overstaying for a long period can also lead to restrictions on future entry. From time to time the UAE announces an amnesty period during which fines may be waived for people who regularise their status or leave.

What can complicate cancellation

  • A travel ban: from a bank debt, rental claim or court case. You cannot leave until it is lifted. See how to check a travel ban.
  • An absconding report: filed by an employer when an employee stops coming to work. It can block a new visa and must be dealt with through the labour and immigration authorities.
  • A labour complaint: unpaid salary, gratuity or a dispute with the employer, usually through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation.
  • Unpaid fines or bills: traffic fines and some unpaid bills can cause problems at departure or renewal.

Before you resign or are let go

If you know your employment is ending, check now for any fines, open cases or bans, settle what you can, and plan the next visa or your departure before the cancellation is processed. Keep copies of your contract, salary records and the cancellation document, in case a dispute about final dues or gratuity follows.

For employers

Employers should cancel visas promptly when employment ends, settle end-of-service dues, and keep records of the cancellation. Failing to cancel can lead to fines and complications for both the company and the former employee.
